‘Roath, Splott and Adamsdown’ – Jeff Childs book signing at Wellfield Bookshop

Roath, Splott and Adamsdown by Jeff Childs

A new book, Roath, Splott and Adamsdown, One Thousand Years of History, was published in September, and its author, Jeff Childs, will be signing copies of the book at Wellfield Bookshop on Saturday 15th September from 11am-1pm.

The book is a comprehensive study of the area, based on Jeff’s work with the Roath Local History Society from the 1980s, including recent additional research, mainly undertaken at Cardiff Central Library.

Jeff previously published a book of archive photographs of the area (Roath, Splott and Adamsdown (1995)), again working in conjunction with the Roath Local History Society.

The new book contains chapters ranging from ‘Medieval Roath’ to ‘Modern Times;  and themes include Industrial and Urban Development, Religion, Education, and Politics.

The recently undertaken research on the more modern history of the area brings the book right up to date – with mentions of the popular community arts festival, Made in Roath; The Gate Arts Centre; and the Roath Farmers’ Market.

Jeff has always been interested in this area of Cardiff, since he has ancestors who lived in parts of Roath, Splott and Adamsdown.  He is a past Chair of Roath Local History Society, and studied for an MA in Local History at Cardiff University when it was first made available in the early 1980s.

Jeff told RoathCardiff that he has written the book to be a ‘detailed and serious study of the area’, but also for it to be accessible and a good read for anyone interested in local history.
