Building work is underway on new facilities at the Mackintosh Sports & Community Club, home to a wide range of sports facilities and the Roath farmers’ market.
A new wing is being added to the front of the community centre which will have facilities for indoor bowls/tennis, a fitness studio and table tennis room which can also be used for events.
The two-storey building extends out from the front of the building into the existing car park. The two tennis courts at the front – currently being used for the Saturday Real Food Market, will become the new car park. Two new tennis courts will be added on what was the old car park on the eastern side of the site.
Old outbuildings and garages which currently stand in the car park are being demolished.
Plans for the development (reproduced below) can be viewed in the Community Centre. A notice of the plans says:
“We have some great news at the Mackintosh, after a lot of work behind the scenes, we are pleased to inform you that we are about to embark on a schedule of building and development works to improve the building and facilities available at the Mackintosh Sports Club & Community Centre.”
The plans estimate that work will be completed in nine months, having started in late October. A well-signposted temporary entrance to the Centre is in place while the work is being carried out.
The regular Saturday craft fair and farmers’ market are both still going strong while the work is underway.
